Ellajay (stage name of Stephanie Schecter) is an indie singer/songwriter based in Brooklyn, NY. She draws listeners in with ear-candy hooks and raw, earnest lyrics that tell stories of unrequited love, struggles of mental health, or occasionally serve up the sass about friends and ex-lovers. Originally hailing from small-town Georgia, Ellajay's sound is a unique blend of indie, pop, alternative, embedded with some folk and rock roots, and with the welcome addition of electronic synth pop sounds after being in the studio for most of 2020. Ellajay's influences roam everywhere from Lana Del Rey to Tom Petty, St. Vincent to Nirvana, Elton John to Billie Eilish, Sheryl Crow to Harry Styles, and etc etc.
Ellajay’s love for music started at a young age and led her to gain a bachelor of arts degree in music theory/composition. As she continued performing as a singer/songwriter through Atlanta and Athens, GA, Charleston, SC and New York City, the sense of empowerment and depth of connection made through music led her to become a board-certified music therapist (MT-BC) and obtain a master’s degree in music therapy from NYU. Alongside her music career, which is her own form of self-care, she currently practices as a part-time music therapist in Brooklyn, NY.
"Being truthful and authentic in my music allows me to actually connect with others in real and deeper ways and that is just the best thing. It's healing to put whatever I'm going through into my art and see that people relate to it. It's saying neither of us are alone in this. That connection is everything".
Ellajay’s debut single "Monsters" and her follow-up "Skydiving", both produced by Adam Tilzer, were released in the fall and winter of 2020.
Her latest single, "Clocking Out", produced by Tiger Darrow, leans into a fun alt-pop vibe. It's upbeat but chill, joyous, but definitely a bit sassy. Streaming everywhere now!
Stay tuned as she gets ready to release more music this summer that are sure to have you singing along!
Thanks for listening! Xx
